The Kogatende Spectacular Migration Safari is one of Tanzania’s most sought-after wildlife experiences, focusing on the dramatic northern phase of the Great Wildebeest Migration. Between July and September, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, gather in the Northern Serengeti around Kogatende and the Mara River. This period offers the best opportunity to witness the world-famous Mara River crossings, where vast herds brave crocodile-infested waters in their search for fresh grazing.
Located in the remote northern section of Serengeti National Park, Kogatende serves as the primary gateway to the Mara River crossing zone and is renowned for exceptional wildlife viewing, predator action, and breathtaking migration spectacles.
Why Visit Kogatende Between July and September?
July
- Herds begin arriving in Northern Serengeti.
- First major Mara River crossings occur.
- Large concentrations of wildebeest gather along riverbanks.
- Excellent predator sightings.
August
- Peak migration season.
- Most reliable Mara River crossing opportunities.
- Thousands of wildebeest cross daily at various points.
- High predator activity and dramatic wildlife encounters.
September
- Massive herds remain concentrated around Kogatende.
- Frequent crossings between Tanzania and Kenya.
- Excellent game viewing with fewer crowds than August.
Ideal month for photography enthusiasts.
